In Pipe Dreams, a three-part series about Azerbaijan, a remote Central Asian country on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, Dan Morgan and David Ottaway of the Washington Post explored United States policy toward local oil reserves, peoples, and politics. Dr. Rob Sobhani, who was teaching at Georgetown University at the time and was one of very few Azerbaijani-speaking Americans, played a key role in 1990 discussions that allowed American oil companies into the Azerbaijani oil fields.
